Mixing Peacocks

Aulonocara are known for their tendency to cross-hybridize; consequently, many responsible aquarists refrain from keeping more than one breeding group in the same aquarium. It is possible; however, to keep different species together if these are selected properly. The charts below document the different groups into which the genus Aulonocara can be subdivided. These combinations are generally considered “safe” provided each fish is matched with a corresponding mate. In other words, a single pair from each of the four groups can be housed together. □
