I bought this cichlid last April (Protomelas taeniolatus Namalenje Island) from a very reputable fish store that is often mentioned on this site. The owner sold it to me at around 2.5 inches and insisted that it's a male. However, the cichlid is not showing any colors within the body. He/she isnot bullied and eats very well. I feed NLS and Hikari Sinking Pellets Excel. Here are a couple of pics. I haven't vented a fish before but want to see if anyone can visually ID these.
That's exactly what I have been thinking. It's a bit over 3.75 inches. If you zoom in on the last pic, it kind of looks like there's a little bit of color in the body. I'm not sure if females can show color there.
Yep, bummer. Fooled the owner of a reputable cichlid store too. He was 100% certain it's a male. Now I guess it's time to hunt for a male red empress.
