I have one and I see them quite often in fish stores. I would say they are quite popular.

Here in the states they are a very popular fish, and based on responses it would seem so in Canada aswell. Although they are popular they are not as common as jack dempseys, oscars, firemouths, or other CA & SA cichlids in the LFS by me. Maybe they are not as common in London. Either way they are one of my favorite fish. I am sure you should be able to find a LFS that will pay a little for them or give you store credit. I have not had a texas spawn myself, so i cannot help you with survival rate.

Congradulations on a spawn, and if you have any pictures we would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Matt

Size of spawn and how many survive are really up to the parents. Large healthy females can likely produce upwards of several hundred eggs and if they are really good parents (or you remove the fry and raise them yourself) you could have 90%+ survival. Thats a lot of Texans.

I was told that if i was to remove all the fry one of the parents would get the hump with the other parent and they would fight, is that correct? Thanks

heres a video of the texas cichlid guarding there wrigglers (you cant see the wrigglers as they are on the back of the wood) I no that cichlids shouldnt really be with plants but i have only recently moved them to this tank and havent had time to change the decor etc around. The texans have uprooted alot of the plants as you will see in the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ1VcyBOrX8

There is always the chance they may get aggitated if you remove all the fry, but with the size of their spawns you could always leave some for them to raise.
