Sorry- another silicone question

Postby bvwalters » Mon Feb 27, 2012 9:28 pm

Been a lurker for a while, but I joined to ask a question on a specific situation; I've read through several threads, but don't see the answer to this question.

I did a DIY styrofoam background on a 220g tank, and adhered it to the aquarium with GE Black Silicone II. I let it cure for 5 days, and then filled the tank with water (added sufficient dechlorinator) and put a few feeder fish in to test it. The test failed :-(

My questions, in no particular order:

- has anyone had success using this silicone, and should I assume it is just toxic to the fish?
- is there any fish-safe sealant that I can apply to the entire covering of the background, so that whatever toxicity that is present in the silicone can be "covered up"?
- is there any test kit available that will allow me to test for whatever is toxic from the silicone?

I apparently cannot post a link until I've had one message posted, so I will post a link to a photo of the tube in a subsequent entry.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated- thanks.

Did you read through the thread on GE silicone 1? I think you may have just proved out what that sticky says. You are also quite likely in a bad situation. No way to test for it that doesn't cost more than the tank. Now way to cover it so it doesn't come out later. Major bummer!!!

PfunMo- horrible news, but thanks for your response. I might just have to scrape it all off and start over.

PS- you're close enough to me to come help- I'm in Wells Branch...

GE Silicone I - Windows / Doors,it is a very debated subject due to the confusing label "100% Silicone" but let's not forget there is a chemical process taking place and this is not silicone.
